Woodlice
If you read all the comments on my previous post, you will see that my cute snail caused something of a hijacking on the subject of creepy-crawlies. I made some assertions regarding woodlice – and then followed up with some research. Here is more than you could possibly want to know about them – including how to keep them as pets!

Funny what will set people off, isn’t it? I myself do not find woodlice cute in the least. (If that’s not too controversial a statement…

Interesting – lots of words though
I’ll have to confess to not having read all of it (yet), and to be left wondering why I find quite so many of them on our living room floor. (It’s probably got something to do with something embarassing like the fact that I don’t hoover enough or that they thrive in dusty, neglected areas!!)

Time to nail my colours to the mast here: I love creepy crawlies and I’m not above prodding pill bugs (woodlice) to see whether they’ll curl up or not. My sister is just the same and our poor mother wants to know where on earth she went wrong…rosie () (link) - 26 September '06 - 22:32
Your bed socks and snail are cute. I’m withholding an opinion on the woodlice subject due to both lack of knowledge and laughing too hard.Carrie K () (link) - 27 September '06 - 00:50
My husband is a Scot and apparently, the local name for them is ‘slater’ up here. Fine. Glad I was right about the crustacea bit, I’ve always been a sponge for completely useless information.Sorry again about the hijack. I’ll keep my opinions to myself in future. Now, where did I leave that fence…?

If you can’t find your fence, Louise, you can always share mine – there’ll be plenty of room on it if I just budge up a bit. Comfortable, aren’t they!!Big Ruth () (link) - 27 September '06 - 15:08
Why would anyone want to keep woodlice as pets? I mean, why? This from the woman who bought her child an ant farm… Haven’t managed to catch any yet, we’ve set the ‘trap’ with jam and at one point had a ‘stupid’ (according to Rhiannon,) ant that came in and couldn’t find his way out, but someone must have come to find him, ‘cos he’s gone now. Hey ho!Louise - 27 September '06 - 16:49
For some reason we called woodlice “pig-ants” as children. Have no idea why. I also have no idea why they’re crawling all over my carpet at the moment. Along with some spider chums!Daisy () (link) - 27 September '06 - 22:18
