Milking it...
There are several stories in the news at the moment that have brought me to tears, but this one brings me closer to shrieks of outrage. (Thanks to Annie for the link.)

Many years ago, maybe at the beginning of the boycott, when my children were small a midwife told me about this. I was incensed. Since then I have never knowingly bought Nestle products. And my children, now shopping for themselves, have carried this on. They have grown up happy, healthy and aware without having eaten Cheerios or drunk Nesquik and we do not drink Nescafe. It’s a small protest, but one I can make. If we all did it things might change.Christine Scantlebury () - 17 May '07 - 16:46
I don’t honestly know why I was hoping things had got better; but I was. I’ve not knowingly bought Nestlé products since I found out about this at college; but they keep buying up more and more companies (Rowntree and Maggi are the most irritating ones in recent years – fruit pastilles! chili sauce!) and occasionally it happens by accident… The ‘everyone else is doing it so why can’t we’ argument never works; and particularly when you’re the big bully in the playground to start with…Liz () (link) - 18 May '07 - 21:05
The formula companies don’t restrict their marketing to the developing world—its’ still going very strong here in the US. After my first son was born just 5 years ago, I left the hospital with a free diaper bag filled with free samples of formulas, and for the next few months, I received sizable coupons for formula in every week’s mail. And all that despite the fact I told the nurses in the hospital that I wanted to breastfeed exclusively! Fortunately, in the two years between the birth of my first and second sons, the policies of the hospital changed, and after the birth of my second son, I went home with leaflets from lactation support services. But that’s not the way it is in every hospital here. Plenty of hospitals still push formula, despite the fact that every one of those medical professionals knows that breast is best.Tracy WW () (link) - 19 May '07 - 21:03
